Why I Stopped Wearing Foundation

Can I tell you something? I chose to stop wearing foundation a few years ago and its taken me this long to really realize it. I know – obviously I knew, but it wasn’t a conscious decision, it just sort of happened. But now I under how and why I got there…

How to Stop Wearing Foundation

So, why did I stop wearing foundation? I think I ran out of the last one I had and realized I was so rarely reaching for it anymore, why did I want to buy more of it? And I always found that foundation was a lot of work. Not it in and of itself, but foundation makes your skin all one color, so then you had to add a bunch of other products to look human again.

And then if your skin was dry or, heaven forbid, sweaty!, then it might get splotchy, and that was always so much work to me.

How did I stop wearing foundation?

Well, two things happened.

First, I use to wear foundation in an effort to make my face look perfect. I had adult acne at times. And that, obviously, led to scarring. I was usually trying to cover these things up. I thought I wanted that perfection look and foundation is how you can get there.

Second, I realized that while covering up is a great way to look ‘perfect,’ having healthier and better skin is actually the way to go. Once I found the cause of my cystic acne, I stopped getting those big breakouts and I became focused on trying to minimize the scarring – it all came down to better skincare, not better makeup.

Between the acne scars and my spots from spending so much time outside (yes with SPF on), I started focusing on finding and using the best hyperpigmentation products (this serum and this exfoliating mask are THE BEST I’ve found)!!

And as my scars faded and my skin barrier improved, I wasn’t yearning for the perfection look anymore. My skin started looking clearer, healthier, and happier, so I didn’t need to cover it up.

Do I still wear makeup? Obviously, yes. You can’t catch me without a clean tinted moisturizer with SPF and I often have at least my go to natural mascara. You can see my entire product breakdown of late in my summer makeup and my year round minimalist makeup routine here.

So if you wonder why I’m always talking about skincare and clean beauty, you’ll know why. I’m obsessed at this point with making my skin as happy, healthy, and vibrant as it can be, so I can stop wearing foundation for good!

My current obsession, by the way, is my new face scrub! It’s the best exfoliating mask I’ve ever tried!!
